Why Major in Anthropology?

Anthropology at Gavilan College

Anthropology is the study of what it means to be human and how humans make meaning. A rich and integrative discipline that prepares students to live and work in a diverse and increasingly interconnected world, anthropology is comprised of cultural, physical, linguistic, archaeological, and applied anthropology. Encouraging students to delve into the hands-on methodologies of fieldwork, anthropology courses at Gavilan College offer students opportunities to design and participate in projects within their communities. Addressing today's cultural, political, and economic challenges through a social justice lens, courses teach students tools for analysis and civic engagement. As we learn about our world's complexity and beauty, we seek ways to make our communities more equitable.

Anthropology Subfields
The ADT in Anthropology prepares students for a seamless transfer into the CSU system to complete a baccalaureate degree in anthropology or a related major. Here is a map to use as a guide for completing an Anthropology ADT. Please note that this map does not take the place of meeting with a counselor to develop your unique education plan. Please be sure to make an appointment with a counselor to design your plan.

The Gavilan College Anthropology Program encompasses three subfields: cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, and archaeology. Anthropology courses teach students to develop a comprehensive understanding of humans in their diversity and complexity. Courses may be taken to satisfy the general education requirements or to meet the requirements for an Associate Degree for Transfer in Anthropology.

Today's anthropologists work in a surprising array of fields and careers. Ann Dunham, the mother of Barack Obama, was an anthropologist. Anthropologists work in education, business, government, communications, nonprofits, museums, disaster areas, research institutes, and more. Whatever their field of choice, anthropologists change the way we view and interact with our world and contribute to making the world a more equitable place.
